Rosh Chodesh shiurAngela takes the rise You knead to read this if you want to make some dough!Every Rosh Chodesh a lady ad- dresses the Shul on Shabbat. We have a wonderful range of topics which are enthusiastically received. Back in January, Angela Kirby took to the pul- pit and delivered her shiur in her own inimitable style, and had the congrega- tion crying with laughter. Ma Chadash is very pleased to publish an extract.Being somewhat of “a certain age” – old enough for the Silver Screen but too young for a bus pass – I became a member of the U3A and joined a class making bread by hand.Having naan of that and not wanting to rye, I decided to grain the advantage and bought my favourite “toy” – a bread maker. I wanted to have a slice of the action, so it was a case of all or muffin. Add the ingredients. Press a few but- tons. Wheat a while. Hey presto – warm, soft bread. A-maizing.Leaving no scone unturned, creating a community is much the same. Add thepeople. Sprinkle with chutzpah. Flavour with Judaism. Hey presto – Barnet Shul. The recipe for bread kneads various in- gredients – flour, water, salt and sugar. But without yeast the bread won’t rise. The membership of a community kneads various people – different backgrounds, political affiliation, ethnicity and religious beliefs. But without Judaism the com- munity won’t flourish.I do not want to waffle on too long, but crust to say... bread with no yeast is matzah. Flat, brittle and completely taste- less. Barnet with no Judaism is gornisht. Dull, boring and completely soulless.Yeast binds the ingredients and brings the bread together. Judaism binds thecommunity and brings the shul to- gether. Crumb to think of it, one ingre- dient does not make a loaf of bread. One Jew does not make a shul com- munity. Every ingredient matters. Every Jew matters.Don’t forget... loafter is the best med- icine. So it seems a pita not to share thismorsel with you. The definition of a bagel is a doughnut with rigor mortis!I don’t want to challah on too long, so let’s roll...PS – the writer received no dough for this article. If you are interested in giving a Rosh Chodesh shiur (and are female of course) please speak to the education committee– puns are optional!Judaism binds the community andbrings the shul togetherMa Chadash | Pesach 5780 37
